Descriptions are both utter nonsense.
If you think that the absence of some "divine purpose" means that "nothing matters in the slightest", I feel bad for you. That would make a dilemma between foolish speculation/belief and melancholy.

life isnt meaningless, but it isnt just working toward the 'afterlife'.
Everything that has happened is for a reason..whether it is a good reason or not...
when mankind goes extinct there will be nobody to ask that question. will there then be a god if nobody is around to wonder? think about it.
I guess it's just kinda like when you're a kid they always say "do your best", and really that's the meaning of life. Doing your best can meen alot of things.

things that hold a meaning for you, might be totally meaningless for everyone else. that's a fact. i think everything you do has a purpose but there's no afterlife. your actions shall hold a meaning for those who follow in your steps, your children and other people around you.
