halo 3 was such a letdown, the graphics aren't really all that great, the story fucking blew. the only thing that keeps it going for me is online but thats getting old, too.
For someone like myself who doesn't fancy the idea of paying extra to reap the full benefits of a game, the first Halo gets my vote.
Fuck paying for Live.

First Halo was tons of fun, but nothing beats Xbox Live.
i can't vote on this... i spent more time exploring in the original Halo than i'll ever spend in hours online in Halo 3... BUT online multiplayer is what makes games now... so this is a toss up, if i had to go with impact, Halo: CE no problem... but for its online play and updated graphics Halo 3 wins... flip the coin, either works...HALO in general is awesome!

its pretty hard to say but when I first played halo with friends, Man its was as great as playin 4 player co op in halo 3 (everyone is betraying each other and then teabagging them)
